Ballymaloe Festival of Food 2026

The Chaos, Community and Magic of Running a Festival

Inside the Feast: The Chaos, Community and Magic of Running a Festival

If you’ve ever attended a great festival, you know the vibe: the buzz of the crowd, the incredible smells wafting through the air, that feeling of pure connected joy. It all feels so beautifully seamless.

But behind the scenes? It’s a beautifully orchestrated madhouse.

Running a festival is a wild rollercoaster of logistics, late-night spreadsheets, and sheer adrenaline. We’ve learned a lot over the years, especially through the evolution of our own event. Today, we’re peeling back the curtain on what it takes to bring the magic to life, our exciting new chapter, and the phenomenal team making it all happen.

Evolution of a Legacy: Ballymaloe Festival of Food and Farming

For the last three years, we poured our hearts into the Festival of Food. It was a celebration of taste, local producers and culinary innovation. But as we grew, we realised that you can't fully celebrate incredible food without honoring exactly where it comes from: the land.

That’s why we are absolutely thrilled to usher in a new era with a brand-new name: Ballymaloe Festival of Food and Farming.

This change is more than just a marketing facelift. It represents a deeper commitment to the full circle of sustenance. By bridging the gap between the plate and the pasture, we’re bringing together chefs, artisans, farmers and innovators to talk about sustainability, regenerative agriculture, and of course delicious food. It’s bigger, more grounded and closer to our roots than ever before.

The Secret Sauce: It’s All About the Team

Here is the honest truth about event management: a festival is only as good as the crew keeping the tents pegged down and the energy high. You can have the most beautiful venue in the world, but without a passionate team, it’s just empty space.

Meet the incredible driving force behind our festival:

  • Bree, Evanna & Marlene: The visionaries and coordinators. They possess the rare superpower of staying utterly calm when everyone else (Bree) is flapping. Their ability to curate an unforgettable lineup while keeping the event's soul intact is unmatched.
  • Victoria: Our staffing and Volunteer wiz who also curated and brought the beautiful Festival of Food Shop together
  • Darren & Ted:  From stage builds and audio-visual tech to making sure the actual logistics of a working farm mesh perfectly with a public festival, these guys make the impossible look easy.

It is a testament to what happens when creative, driven people pull in the same direction, bringing diverse skills together to build something unforgettable.

What It Really Takes to Run a Success Story

If you’re dreaming of launching your own festival, or just curious about how the event gets made, here are the three golden rules we live by:

1. Expect the Unexpected (And Laugh at It)

Weather changes. guests speakers cancel or get delayed, deliveries dont get delivered or we order the wrong cut of meat for a dining pop-up for 100 guests. Adaptability isn’t just a skill; it’s a survival mechanism.

2. Community Over Commercialism

People don't fall in love with festivals because of corporate logos; they fall in love because of the atmosphere. We place a massive emphasis on highlighting local independent farmers and food heroes. When your community feels seen and valued, they become your biggest champions.

3. Lean on Your Crew

The festival weekend is a marathon. Trusting your team to own their zones—and being ready to jump in and help them when needed—is the only way to cross the finish line with a smile on your face.

The Journey Continues

As we look ahead to the upcoming Ballymaloe Festival of Food and Farming, the excitement in our office is palpable. We are cooking up something truly special this year, blending the rich heritage of farming with the cutting edge of the culinary world.

To everyone who has supported the Festival of Food in the past: thank you. We can't wait to welcome you to this next, greater chapter. Stay tuned for more behind-the-scenes updates from Bree, Evanna, Marlene, Victoria, Darren, and Ted.
